June 11 Forest & Field: Yoga Hike-Little River Trail Interested in starting your day in a positive way? Experience yoga while enjoying the beauty that is Desoto State Park! Join yoga teacher Deidre Brown and park naturalist Brittney Hughes for a great outdoor experience of strengthening yoga poses AND hiking along beautiful trails. This hike will be a mix of trail hiking with an outdoor yoga session. Combining hiking and yoga practice in the great outdoors confers benefits unmatched in any other setting. You get the light cardio and strength-building that hiking offers, the toning, flexibility, and relaxation that yoga offers, and the powerful connection to Mother Nature that being outdoors offers.  This hike will be along the yellow trail following the West Fork of Little River from the DeSoto State Park Lodge onto the historic CCC trailside shelter for some nice views of the river. Visit a Drive-In Theatre in honor of National Drive-In Movie Day

Drive-Ins have been described as “the essence of American Culture”, “part of an American tradition”, “a great way to spend time with family”, and “a real piece of history”. There is nothing quite like the experience of a drive-in.
Drive-ins date back to New Mexico in 1913, where a partial drive-in theatre was opened on April 23rd in Las Cruces called Theatre de Guadalupe.  In 1921, a drive-in was opened in Comanche, Texas where cars parked bumper-to-bumper and patrons witnessed silent films from their cars.  Outdoor movies became very popular in the 1920's and the drive-in theatre was patented in Camden, New Jersey by Richard M. Hollingshead, Jr. on May 16, 1933.

During their peak in the late 50's and early 60's, there were more than 4,000 Drive-In Theaters in the United States, but in the 1970's those numbers began to decline rapidly and now over 90% of them have gone dark for good.  At the end of 2013, 35mm movie reels were no longer available to theaters and now only digital files are being distributed. That caused even more closures due to the fact that some drive-ins could afford the required change in equipment. Currently, there are somewhere around 340 drive-ins left in the United States. Nine of those are located in the State of Alabama, but there is only one located here in DeKalb County; Henagar Drive-In Theatre.
Drive-ins provide a romantic and nostalgic alternative to a traditional theater and also offer an experience and an opportunity that is more than seeing a motion picture in the outdoors. It is about seeing the bigger picture - choosing the drive-in as an opportunity to celebrate and help preserve the "essence of American Culture".  Drive-ins allow families a more interactive and easy going experience that is not possible at indoor theaters.

Gate usually open at 6:30pm CST and movie starts at dusk. Cash only accepted at the gate, but cash, debit, and credit are all accepted in the concession stand. Pricing is as follows: 1 person per vehicle $5; 2 persons per vehicle $10; 3 persons or more per vehicle $15; Children under 3 are free.

June 2 - 4 Big Wills Arts Council presents the Photography of Steven Stiefel.  Photographer, Steven Stiefel brings his unique view of the world through the lens of his camera to The Fort Payne Coal and Iron Building, located at 501 Gault Ave. N. Opening Reception is on June 2nd at 6pm, with the show hours on Saturday the 3rd from 10am till 4pm and Sunday June 4th from 12pm till 4pm. Archery - Have you ever wanted to release your inner archer? Join Alabama Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fishery’s Stuart Goldsby for an opportunity to learn archery safety & techniques. This is a great opportunity to brush-up on the basics or start from scratch with the guidance of certified instructors. Ages 10 and up. All Equipment is provided. Time: 10am, 12pm, & 2 pm

Birds of Prey Program with Alabama Wildlife Center - Join Scottie Jackson from the Alabama Wildlife Center, for a showcase of various birds of prey; she will present each bird’s unique abilities, adaptations, predator/prey relationships, specific characteristics, natural histories, and the personal histories of each bird. Time: 10:00 & 12:30.  Small pavilion on field.
Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration - Dutch ovens have been in use for hundreds of years; especially when our country was expanding and families were on the move. Unable to bring their large cook stoves with them, women learned how to cook entire meals from stews & soups to bread & desserts, in their Dutch ovens. Learn the basics about Dutch ovens, how to clean & care for your cookware, AND cook (& eat!) dinner & dessert at the same time! This is a demonstration, so the best part is when food is just coming off the fire! Time: 10:30-2:00The Backwoods Revival Band will be playing bluegrass music at the Great Outdoors Day event. June 3 - Grassroots Gathering - The Little River Waterkeeper presents the 1st annual Grassroots Get Down! Farm to Table Dinner Fundraiser on the bank of Little River at Historic Nippersink Lodge (located at 52 County Rd. 936 in Mentone) at 5 pm. Join us in celebrating our local farmers, local food, and local community! This fundraising event will showcase the incredibly talented farmers and food producers at The Farm at Windy Hill and Harvest Roots Ferments. Tickets are priced at $50 each and will be limited to 30. We will be serving a menu that will showcase the best of the local foods in season that Lookout Mountain has to offer. Entertainment by Matty Croxton.

June 4 - DeSoto State Park Sunday Lunch Buffet - Let us do the cooking for you and your family this Sunday! Enjoy a Lunch Buffet at the Mountain Inn Restaurant, located in DeSoto's historic Lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  Cost is $13.95 per person.

DeKalb County Fiddlers' Convention 109th Anniversary

The 109th Anniversary of the DeKalb County Fiddlers Convention is Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Rotary Pavilion in downtown Fort Payne (located at 202 5th Street NE). For more than a century, DeKalb County has celebrated the sounds of the fiddle with many different artists, all adding their own sounds and giving us a bluegrass meets ol' time music feel today. Contestants will no only "Celebrate the Heritage" of DeKalb County and the fiddle, but will compete in a number of categories for over $4800 in cash prizes, all while supporting the Big Wills Arts Council & Fort Payne City Schools Arts in Education Program.
